A Waterproof Cable Gland (also referred to as a weather-protected or liquid-tight gland) is a specialized fitting designed to secure a cable to an enclosure while preventing the ingress of water, moisture, and dust. These are the industry standard for maintaining the Ingress Protection (IP) rating of electrical panels and junction boxes in outdoor or wash-down environments.

1. Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings

The "waterproof" capability is defined by its IP rating. Most high-quality waterproof glands offer:

• IP67: Protection against dust and temporary immersion in water.

• IP68: Total protection against dust and continuous immersion in water under pressure (usually up to 1 meter or more).

• IP69K: Resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature jet washes (common in food processing).

2. Core Components

• Sealing Nut (Dome Nut): When tightened, it compresses the internal seal around the cable.

• Claw/Collet: A flexible "finger" system that provides a 360 grip for superior strain relief.

• Sealing Insert: Made from Neoprene, EPDM, or Silicone, this rubber-like ring creates the actual watertight barrier.

• O-Ring/Washer: Placed at the entry thread to ensure water doesn't leak between the gland body and the enclosure wall.
