      A Brass Fusible Plug is a specialized thermal safety relief device used extensively in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Its primary function is to protect pressure vesselssuch as liquid receivers or condensersfrom catastrophic failure due to excessive heat or fire. Unlike a standard pressure relief valve that responds to internal pressure, the fusible plug is an "ultimate" safety device that responds specifically to temperature.

      Material and Composition

      The body of the plug is precision-machined from high-grade forged brass, chosen for its excellent thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and ability to maintain structural integrity under high pressure. The center of the plug contains a hollow core filled with a specialized low-melting-point eutectic alloy. This alloy is engineered to remain solid under normal operating conditions but melt rapidly at a specific, predetermined temperature (commonly 74C, 100C, or 110C, depending on the refrigerant type and system requirements).

      Functional Mechanism

      In the event of a fire or extreme ambient heat, the temperature of the refrigeration system rises. Once the external heat reaches the alloy's melting point, the core liquefies and is forced out by the internal pressure of the refrigerant. This creates a clear path for the refrigerant to be vented safely into the atmosphere. By releasing the charge, the plug prevents the internal pressure from reaching the bursting point of the steel vessel, thereby preventing explosions.

      • One-Time Use: Fusible plugs are "non-reclosing" devices. Once the alloy has melted, the plug must be replaced to restore the system.

      • Leak-Proof Threads: Typically designed with NPT (National Pipe Thread) or BSPT tapered threads to ensure a gas-tight seal when installed directly into the pressure vessel.

      • Compact Design: Their small footprint allows them to be installed in tight spaces where a bulky spring-loaded relief valve might not fit.

      • Compliance: These components are manufactured to meet strict safety standards (such as ASME or UL), ensuring the alloy triggers precisely at the rated temperature.
