Product Description

A Brass Refrigerant Charging Valve (also known as a Schrader Valve or Access Valve) is a high-precision component that allows technicians to connect gauges, vacuum pumps, and refrigerant canisters to an HVAC or refrigeration system. It functions similarly to a tire valve but is engineered to handle extreme pressures and chemically reactive refrigerants.

How the Mechanism Works

The valve operates on a "normally closed" principle:

  • The Seal: A small internal spring pushes a synthetic rubber seal (often Neoprene or Viton) against a seat inside the brass body.

  • The Connection: When a charging hose is screwed onto the valve, a "depressor" inside the hose pushes the valve core pin down, allowing refrigerant to flow.

  • The Disconnect: As the hose is removed, the internal spring snaps the core back into the sealed position instantly, minimizing refrigerant loss (or "finger burn").


3. Technical Specifications

Refrigerant charging valves are strictly standardized to ensure tool compatibility across the globe.

  • Connection Size: The most common size is 1/4" SAE Flare (7/16"20 UNF thread). Systems using R-410A or R-32 sometimes use a larger 5/16" port to prevent accidental mixing of older refrigerants.

  • Pressure Rating: Typically rated for 600 to 800 PSI working pressure, with burst pressures exceeding 3,000 PSI.

  • Temperature Compatibility: Designed to withstand the high heat of brazing (up to 250C for short bursts) and the extreme cold of liquid refrigerant.


4. Professional Installation Tips

For high-quality results in both field use and product cataloging, these details are essential:

  • Core Removal: During the brazing process (attaching the valve to copper pipe), the valve core must be removed. The intense heat of a torch will melt the tiny rubber seals inside the core. It should only be re-installed once the brass has cooled.

  • Vacuum Efficiency: For faster system evacuations, technicians use a "Core Removal Tool" to pull the vacuum through the wide-open brass body rather than the restrictive valve core.

  • The Hex Cap: Never rely on the valve core alone to hold the pressure. A heavy-duty brass hex cap with an internal gasket is considered the "primary seal" in a professional installation.
