Flameproof Cable Gland

A Flameproof Cable Gland (often designated as Ex d) is a specialized safety component designed for use in hazardous areas where explosive gases, vapors, or dust may be present. Unlike standard glands, flameproof versions are engineered to contain any internal explosion that may occur within an enclosure, preventing it from igniting the surrounding flammable atmosphere.

Critical Safety Mechanisms

• Flame Path (Gap): The gland is constructed with precision-engineered threads and internal tolerances that create a "flame path." If a spark occurs inside the equipment, the escaping hot gases are cooled down as they pass through these narrow gaps, ensuring they are at a safe temperature before reaching the outside environment.

• Robust Construction: Typically forged from Heavy-Duty Brass, Nickel-Plated Brass, or Stainless Steel (SS316L) to withstand high internal pressure during an ignition event.

• Sealing: They feature high-performance silicone or EPDM displacement seals that provide an IP66/IP67/IP68 rating while maintaining a gas-tight interface.

Types of Flameproof Glands

1. Single Compression: Seals the outer sheath of the cable; typically used for light-duty hazardous applications.

2. Double Compression: Provides independent seals on both the inner bedding and the outer sheath. This is the industry standard for Armored Cables (SWA) in high-risk zones.

Applications & Certification

These glands are mandatory in Oil & Gas refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms, and mining operations. They must comply with international standards such as ATEX (Europe), IECEx (Global), or PESO (India). When installing, it is vital to ensure the thread type (Metric or NPT) matches the enclosure to maintain the integrity of the flameproof path.
