VERTICAL FIRE SPRINKLERS

While the term "Vertical Fire Sprinkler" is occasionally used in general conversation, in the fire protection industry, it almost always refers to Upright Fire Sprinklers. However, technically, "vertical" can also refer to Vertical Sidewall Sprinklers, which are a distinct and less common category.

1. Upright Sprinklers (The Most Common "Vertical" Type)

These are installed vertically on top of the piping. They are the standard choice for areas with exposed ceilings.

• Orientation: Pointing toward the ceiling.

• Protection: The deflector sits at the top, catching the water and directing it into a hemispherical dome.

• Application: Best for warehouses, parking garages, and mechanical rooms where the piping is exposed and the head needs protection from mechanical damage.

2. Vertical Sidewall Sprinklers

These are a specific type of sidewall head designed to be installed in a vertical orientation (standing up or hanging down) rather than the typical horizontal "out-of-the-wall" style.

• Where they are used: Often found in small rooms, closets, or narrow hallways where horizontal piping is available but a standard horizontal head won't fit the wall profile.

• Unique Deflector: The deflector is "J-shaped" or uniquely angled to take water coming from a vertical pipe and throw it out horizontally into the room.

• Versatility: Most are listed for use in both the upright (pointing up) and pendent (pointing down) positions to accommodate different piping heights within a wall cavity
