Product Description
Pendent fire sprinklers are the most recognizable type of fire suppression head, characterized by their downward-facing orientation. They are designed to be installed on the underside of piping, hanging from the ceiling to provide a wide, circular spray coverage.
Why Choose Pendent Sprinklers?
Pendent heads are the preferred choice for finished interiors where aesthetics and maximum floor coverage are priorities.
-
Maximum Coverage: The deflector is designed to push water outward and downward, creating a broad "umbrella" pattern that covers more floor area than other orientations.
-
Versatile Aesthetics: Because they hang down, they can be easily integrated into suspended ceilings using "escutcheons" (trim rings) or hidden entirely behind cover plates.
-
Residential & Commercial Standard: They are the default for hotels, apartments, offices, and retail spaces.
Variants of Pendent Sprinklers
Depending on the architectural requirements, pendent heads come in three main styles:
-
Recessed Pendent: The head is partially tucked into the ceiling, with only the bulb and deflector visible. This is the most common look in modern offices.
-
Concealed Pendent: The sprinkler is entirely hidden behind a flat, circular cover plate. When the room temperature rises (usually to about 57C), the plate falls away, allowing the head to drop down and activate if the temperature continues to rise.
-
Flush Pendent: The head sits nearly level with the ceiling. These are less common today, as recessed and concealed options offer better aesthetics and protection.
Technical Components
-
The Frame: Typically made of high-quality brass or bronze, often finished in chrome, white, or black to match the ceiling.
-
Deflector Shape: Unlike the curved deflector of an upright sprinkler, a pendent deflector is flat or slightly flared at the edges to ensure the water is driven downward toward the fire source.
-
Glass Bulb: Most pendent heads in occupied spaces utilize a Quick Response (3mm) bulb to activate as early as possible for life safety.
Installation & Maintenance Essentials
-
Escutcheons: These are the metal plates that cover the gap between the sprinkler head and the ceiling tile. It is critical to use the correct, listed escutcheon for the specific head to ensure it doesn't interfere with activation.
-
Pitch & Alignment: Pendent heads must be installed perfectly vertical. If they are tilted, the spray pattern will be uneven, potentially leaving "dry spots" during a fire.
-
Cleaning: Never paint or tape a pendent sprinkler. Even a thin layer of dust or paint can insulate the glass bulb, significantly delaying its activation time.
