A Nylon Insert Lock Nut, commonly referred to as a Nyloc nut, is a specialized torque-prevailing fastener designed to resist loosening under conditions of severe vibration and dynamic loads. Unlike standard hex nuts, the Nyloc nut features a distinctive integrated collar that houses a captive nylon ring.

Internal Mechanism and Functionality

The locking action of the nut is mechanical rather than chemical. When a bolt is threaded into the nut, it encounters the nylon insert at the top of the hexagonal body.

1. Interference Fit: The internal diameter of the nylon ring is slightly smaller than the major diameter of the matching bolt.

2. Thread Compression: As the bolt penetrates the nylon, it does not "cut" threads into the plastic; instead, the nylon deforms elastically around the bolt threads.

3. Radial Friction: This compression creates a tight, 360-degree frictional grip (prevailing torque) that keeps the nut in a fixed position even when the assembly is not under tension.

Key Technical Advantages

• Vibration Resistance: Standard nuts can "walk" off a bolt due to thermal expansion or mechanical oscillation. The nylon insert maintains a constant grip, preventing accidental disassembly.

• Sealing Properties: The tight fit of the nylon against the bolt threads provides a secondary benefit by helping to seal against the seepage of water, oil, or cleaning solvents along the thread path.

• Non-Damaging: Unlike "all-metal" locking nuts that use deformed threads to create friction, the nylon insert is relatively gentle on the bolt's surface, reducing the risk of galling or stripping.

• Temperature Range: Typically rated for consistent performance up to 120C (248F), making them suitable for most industrial and automotive environments.
