A brass flare elbow is a high-strength plumbing and gas fitting designed to connect two pipes or tubes at a 90-degree angle while creating a mechanical, leak-proof seal. Unlike standard pipe fittings that rely on threads or soldering alone, flare fittings are engineered for applications where a high-pressure, metal-to-metal seal is required without the use of pipe dope or Teflon tape.

Mechanics of the Flare Joint

The reliability of the brass flare elbow comes from its unique design. One end of the tubing is expanded (flared) into a bell shape using a specialized tool. This flared tube is then pressed against the tapered end of the elbow by a flare nut. As the nut is tightened, it compresses the soft copper or aluminum tubing against the hard brass elbow, creating a reusable, airtight seal that can withstand significant vibration and pressure fluctuations.

Brass is used for these fittings because it offers a rare combination of malleability and strength.
